Design Hotels We Love: Hotel La Semilla

We’ve just discovered a new addition to the Design Hotels Collection with a beautiful little boutique Bed & Breakfast on the Riviera Maya called Hotel La Semilla. While it only opened in December of last year, it already shows a great deal of thought, passion and attention to detail. The overall design theme if “rough luxe”, which is a theme you’ll find in our more vintage-styled suites for MySuites. “Rough luxe” is not luxury based on price, but more the experience. The rough luxe experience is centered around personality, uniqueness and story. You’ll find furniture from local craftsmen and boutiques, decor with history and art with a story behind it.

Hotel La Semilla is founded, designed and run by Alexis Scharer and Angie Rodriguez, who met in NYC and both share experience working with luxury hotels.  They’ve filled their B&B with unique and authentic furniture and decor, hand-picked from Mexican flea markets to immerse you in the local design culture and elevate your authentic Mexican Riviera experience. Natural and local materials are employed, such as stone, bricks and polished concrete. They’ve also added plenty of original details, such as converting suitcase drawers into a nightstand or complimentary vintage bikes to explore the neighborhood. From their travels abroad, their design has taken influence from other seaside paradises including Greece and Saint Barts. They’ve also taken influence from their northern home with some NYC loft styling. Highlights include their garden lobby, rooftop terrace and their Cocina Loft, which is their open kitchen that serves up serene breakfasts for guests.

It’s situated in a refurbished building surrounded by lush greenery in the northern trendy end of Playa del Carmen’s famous 5th Avenue. And you’ll find the stunning Caribbean Sea only 100 meters away.
